Medieval settlement on the banks of the Ashuluk River. As a result of archaeological research begun in 1965, it became possible to assert that this area, located almost 150 km from Astrakhan, is the capital of the Golden Horde. Scientists have conducted many studies and concluded that the city was founded under Batu in the 13th century. The location of the city on the route of the Great Silk Road gave all the prerequisites for its development. Sarai-Batu was distinguished by the presence of water communications, as well as a rapidly growing number of workshops to produce ceramics and glass, bone carving and metal processing.
