Arkhyz is a village in the Zelenchuksky district of Karachay-Cherkessia, located in the basin of the Bolshoy Zelenchuk River. In the Arkhyz region there are several peaks popular with climbers. Ascents to these peaks are classified by the second or third categories of difficulty. The "mountainous region of Arkhyz" includes the upper part (upstream) of the Bolshoy Zelenchuk gorge and its tributaries, including the settlements of Arkhyz and Nizhniy Arkhyz. The village is located at the bottom of a large basin, on a river terrace at an altitude of 1450−1500 m above sea level.
